TARTAN TUESDAY! Today's tartan highlight is Clan Innes!

The traditional clan lands are in Moray (northeast Scotland), with the historic seat being Innes House in the city of Elgin.
The founder of the Inneses is a Flemish knight who was given the lands of Innes by King Malcom IV in 1160. His grandson took the name as his last name, which was legally recognized in 1226.

In the early 1400s, Bishop John Innes, brother of the 9th Chief, led efforts to restore the ravaged Elgin Cathedral. Half a century later, his descendant, Robert Innes, the 11th Chief, founded the Greyfriars of Elgin monastery as an act of atonement for his involvement in the Battle of Brechin. In 1648, the monastery was repurposed into a private residence. Two and a half centuries later, the Sisters of Mercy purchased the building and restored it as a place of worship, where it has remained a convent ever since.
Sir Robert Innes, the 20th Chief was knighted and made a baronet of Nova Scotia in 1625. His grandson Sir James, 22nd Chief, married Lady Margaret Ker in 1666. Sir James, 25th Chief, inherited the Dukedom of Roxburghe from the Ker family when the last duke died without an heir in 1805. Because of this new title, he combined the Innes and Ker names. Unfortunately for Clan Innes, that meant the end of the chiefship. The government will not recognize a Clan Innes chief with a Innes-Ker last name.

The tartan colours are red, dark green, navy, black, yellow, white, and light blue. This tartan was first recorded in 1880.
The last recognized Chief is Sir James Innes-Ker (1736-1823). However, Charles Robert George Innes-Ker (b.1981), 11th Duke of Roxburghe, is heir to the chiefship of Clan Innes, though cannot officially be considered Chief because of his last name.
