TARTAN TUESDAY! Today's tartan highlight is Clan H TARTAN TUESDAY! Today's tartan highlight is Clan Hamilton! Motto: Through - The traditional clan lands are in Lanarkshire (southern Scotland), with the historic seat being Hamilton Palace. The current seat is at Lennoxlove House in Haddington. The founder of the Hamiltons is Walter Fitz Gilbert of Hambledon. His name first appeared in 1294. He originally owned lands in Renfrewshire, but was later awarded lands in Lanarkshire, becoming the traditional clan lands. - The Hamiltons had close ties to the royal family since the 15th century. In 1474, James Hamilton married Princess Mary, daughter of King James II of Scotland. James' grandson, also named James, was heir to the throne of Scotland and was made regent while Mary, Queen of Scots was a child. He was sent into exile in 1561 for openly opposing Mary's marriage to Henry Stuart. He had been hoping she would marry his son James Hamilton. In 1643, another James Hamilton was awarded a dukedom by King Charles I for his loyalty. His title, estates and debts were inherited by his daughter Anne Hamilton. She married William Douglas, 1st Earl of Selkirk in 1656 and had 13 children together. From then on, the Duke family surname became 'Douglas-Hamilton'. Thomas Douglas, 5th Earl of Selkirk (great-great-grandson of Anne Hamilton) is the same Lord Selkirk that helped establish the Red River Colony! - The tartan colours are red, blue and white. The tartan was first recorded in 1842. The current Chief is Alexander Douglas Douglas-Hamilton, 16th Duke Hamilton (b.1978), who took over for his father in Angus in 2010. #standrewsheritagecenter #redriver #manitobamuseums #history #scottish #tartan
