Have you ever taken a close look at Mary Kennedy’s journal on display in the Parlour and noticed something amiss?

In March 1880, Mary copied out a poem titled “A Woman’s Question” and attributed it to Elizabeth Barrett Browning. This is a common miss-title and misattribution in literary history!

This poem, “A Woman’s Answer to a Man’s Question”, was written by Mary T. Lathrap (1838-1895), a licensed Methodist minister in Michigan. It is unknown how the mistake began, but by 1890 the poem was generally attributed to Browning as “A Woman’s Question”. Mary Kennedy’s diary entry notes the year 1880, so the mistake must have been in wider circulation than previously thought.

Compilations of love poems published in 1936 and 1956 seem to have added to the confusion by attributing the poem to “Lena Lathrop”—Mary T. Lathrap used the pseudonym “Lena” in her youth, and her contemporary publishers and journalists misspelled her last name as “Lathrop”. Another publisher in 1964 mistakenly identified her as the first female member of the American Bar Association, Mary Florence Lathrop of Colorado. Looks like Mary Kennedy wasn’t the only one confused!
